Icelandic Fiber is
OUT OF THIS WORLD!
You may think you know wool, but you've never seen anything with the character of Icelandic fiber!
- 2 in 1 - Want character fleece and fine soft fleece? Icelandic has both! The fine, soft inner layer is called Thel, the outer, courser, character fiber is called Tog. Together, they are Icelandic!
- Easy felted - Icelandic fiber felts so easily, we can't actually coat our sheep like fiber producers with other breeds. We'd just end up with one enormous felted Matt!
- Long staple length - Icelandic fiber can be anywhere from 6" for the individuals with "short fleece" to well over a foot for the guys with epic locks.
- Incredible color varieties - Brown, black, brown grey, black grey, white, brown tipped black, fawn with black and grey, you name the natural color, we've got you covered! Want to dye it instead? Icelandic fiber also dyes like a dream. Wahooo!!!
WHAT MAKES OUR FIBER
Different?
- Hand harvested – Unlike most sheep breeds, Icelandics shed their wool in the spring, which means you can pluck rather than shear. This is called rooing. The cool thing about rooed fibers is that they have no sharp, cut ends. They are also full and complete: no little bits of the new year's fiber in the mix.
- Hand curated – When the fiber comes off of the animal it gets a bit...jumbled. For our locks, we sort through our fleeces and pull out the locks that maintain their original structure, collecting them into bundles for cleaning with all of the thel ends collected and all of the tog awesomeness aligned.
- Hand cleaned – We choose to collect fiber from our sheep once a year in the spring. That means we get maximum growth, but it also means the fiber has had to go through the winter still on the animal, which can be rough on fiber: more vegetable matter, more tangles, etc. That means we are also choosing to be very careful and intense in our selection and preparation of our lock sections!
- We know our Sheep!!! – We love our flock, we spend a lot of time with them, and we know their fiber: its length, its density, its softness, its luster, its balance...Every animal is unique! When you get locks from us, you'll also know the name of the animal who contributed it. You can look them up and see pictures of them in all their glory. So Fun!!!
