Alpacas

We got introduced to Alpacas by our friend Diana, she just loves Alpacas and welcomed the kids into the world of showing these big fluffy teddy bears. As time went on we met individuals wanting to downsize their flocks for various reasons and we ended up with a several free Alpacas. We've liked having them as part of our Flerd for a couple of reasons: they have lovely fiber, they are a guard animal and will warn about danger (which was particularly helpful before we got the dogs), and they have a different grazing profile than the sheep, cows and goats so they improve our pasture utilization and management.

Clarice is an exquisite example of the huakaya breed: she has beautifully dense, crimpy fleece, very flat topline, beautiful eyes, and a shorter nose. She is a beautiful lady. She is also our dog disciplinarian. If Silas ever gets over enthusiastic in his efforts to move his charges to safety, Clarice is the lady to let him know about it.

Chi Chi has lovely fleece and a calm gentle personality. She was our very first alpaca and was very pleased when she got some alpaca friends. The cows just didn't quite cut it. When Chi Chi was a baby she suffered from West Nile Virus and it impacted the growth of her front legs. We thought we would never be able to breed her, but as we observed her, we couldn't see any reason why she couldn't carry a cria since the illness only affected her front legs. So we introduced her to Galahad and about a year later she had our wonderful little Charles. She did a fantastic job as a mama!

Alpacas look snuggly and cuddly, but in general they are not actually particularly fond of being touched, unless you are talking about Charles. Charles loves people! We suspect it's because when he was born his contemporary young animals happened to be our crew of lambs and kids and he learned from them that people are A-Okay! It is so delightful to have an alpaca around that you can actually pet and cuddle, though he is like other alpacas in that he is definitely fond of having his feet trimmed. Oh well, nobody's perfect.

Pebbles was a beautiful rose grey alpaca. She came to us with Clarice from Bryan White our shearer. She was the mama of our very first cria, Sandy. She delivered all on her own and we found out when one of the girls went out to check on everybody and then came flying back in with the news. We called our mentor Diana really quickly!!! Pebbles did a great job as a mama, nursing Sandy until she was three and definitely didn't need to be nursing any more. You should be done nursing when you are as big as your mama, even if she'll still let you! Pebbles struggled holding weight on pasture. We pulled her up to the barn so she could have a specialized diet, but being separated from her fellow alpacas was really hard on her. So we made the tough decision to return her to her alpaca family even if it meant that she wouldn't make it. She passed away peacefully one late fall morning surrounded by her friends.
