Livestock Guardian Dogs

We spent one summer on Peaceful Valley running Sheep with Alpacas and an electric net fence as our only protection for the Flerd. After a lot of nights spent worrying about everyone as the coyotes called out to each other getting Livestock Guardian Dogs became a priority. We have loved our Colorado Mountain Dogs.

Tovah is the most gentle, loving dog imaginable. We absolutely love having her on our team. She retired from pasture management in the summer of 2022 and moved to homebase protection. She hangs out with us here at the house and at night she protects the poultry and anyone residing in the barn. She is a gentle, but inexorable requester of love. Sit down and she will come and sit beside you, and then gently put her nose under your arm and move your hand to her head. If you stop petting her, she will gently repeat the process. She loves everyone, except anyone and anything who threatens her charges. She is also an arial predator specialist, which is perfect given her job as the poultry protector.

Silas is a very impressive fellow! He is tall and regal, with a fantastic head and beautiful tail. He is also our snake expert extraordinaire. We can hear Silas's snake bark from a mile away, literally, and we know to come running with the snake tongs and bucket. He is training our new girls well in the art of snake control, but he is very particular about his training methods and will only take a break from barking at a snake to get one of the girls in trouble for coming too close. Silas is very dedicated about his job and more suspicious of strangers than any other member of our protection team. Before bringing new people into Silas's area, we pull him outside the fence and introduce him on neutral territory. After that he's good with people coming in to see HIS sheep and goats. Silas also loves doing underdogs. When you go into the pen to do chores Silas comes up for a rub and then sticks his nose between your legs to go under. Stand on your tiptoes and under he goes, turns around and comes back through, and repeat again, and again, and again. What a goofball!

Edmund joined us as a puppy in the spring of 2020. He and his brother Chester have been an integral part of our protection crew and guard our boys crew: rams, billies, alpacas, etc. At this time they also have charge over the cows. Edmund's only failing is a desire to be the alpha in the team when Chester is the actual alpha. Chester is remarkably laid back about his position, so Edmund keeps pushing about it: Edmund picks the fights, Chester finishes them. The problem is, it's hard to muster up a lot of sympathy for your beat up dog when he's the one who started the whole thing. Sigh!!!

Chester is the most chill stud dog on the planet! He is very alert and engaged in the protection of his crew, but he blends that with a remarkable care and gentleness for everyone in his group (with the notable exception of Edmund when he picks a fight, then he's decisive!). Chester can frequently be found with slobbery fur because he and our heifer Autumn have a special bond and Autumn loves licking Chester. Chester, for his part revels in the attention. As a puppy, Chester was brown, but as he has aged his coat has become a beautiful golden color. We expect that he will probably throw that beautiful coloring in his future pups.

Ann is a very nicely put together lady and she is a very attentive guardian. We are being very pleased with how Ann is developing as she grows. She has a stocky impressive build with a thick, soft coat and an beautiful head. We are excited to see how she continues to develop. As she approaches breeding age we will complete her OFA hip testing and see if we will be able to see all of her impressiveness passed on to a new generation of guardians.

Emily is more long and lean than Ann. She is a more subservient member of the pack, but that does not mean she is quiet or shy about her job as a guardian. She is very alert, attentive, and engaged in her work. We look forward to the time we can complete Emily's hip tests and see her become a mama. She is going to be awesome!
